From the east, to reach the southern start of the Big Sur road requires cresting the Santa Lucia mountain range, and it’s here we’re met with one of the most unexpected sights. Far off the coast, a towering wall of cement-grey cloud rises from the ocean, as if an artificial wall, like we’re in a real life Truman Show. “Oh, that’s just the fog,” shrugs a local petrol station worker. “It normally gets burned off by the sun about midday.”
