Suzuki Jimny wait times in Australia: The latest information

Wait times for the Suzuki Jimny four-wheel-drive are reducing as production bottlenecks ease. Here is what you need to know.


Wait times for all three-door 2024 Suzuki Jimny models have dropped below 12 months for the first time in a year amid improved production out of Japan.

Order books for the three-door automatic Jimny were formally re-opened earlier this week after they were shut in January 2023 – and orders briefly resumed for a batch of 500 cars in September, which were snapped up in five hours.

Suzuki Australia says it held off on resuming orders until it could contain wait times to less than 12 months.

Buyers could still order a three-door manual Jimny throughout the automatic order pause – while, since its unveiling at the start of the year, Suzuki has taken more than 2000 pre-orders for the new five-door Jimny XL which is due in showrooms at the start of next year.

Speaking to Drive this week, boss of the Suzuki Australia automotive division Michael Pachota told Drive – as of the afternoon of Tuesday 5 December – the following estimated wait times for the Jimny range:

  • Three-door manual: Six to nine months
  • Three-door auto: Nine to 12 months
  • Five-door XL manual or auto: Six to nine months

The above estimates were given shortly after the price of the Jimny XL was announced – as $3000 more expensive than the three-door version – and hours after order books for the three-door automatic re-opened.

“Based on the overwhelming feedback that I’ve been receiving already on my phone since the price release … half an hour ago [when this interview was conducted], I’d like to suggest that [demand for Jimny XL] will scream a little bit louder,” Mr Pachota told Drive on Tuesday afternoon

Whereas the Jimny three-door is manufactured in Japan, the five-door XL comes from India.

“To best describe it, the word would be ‘strong’,” Mr Pachota told Drive when asked how free supply of the five-door model would be from the Indian factory.

“With that said, we can see or forecast incremental volume on top of the current volume that we’ve been achieving with Jimny up until the end of 2023, and I can see that grow significantly in 2024 for us both on all variants of Jimny, including Jimny Lite and XL. And I’d like to hope that continues into 2025 as well.”

There is a longer wait time for vehicles with two-tone paint, compared to single-tone models.

“It’s hard to nominate an exact wait time as it is based on colour. Sometimes there are delays on two-tone [colour] availability, based on the overwhelming demand from a global perspective.

“As you can imagine, it’s a slightly different process to manufacture a two-tone vehicle versus a single tone.”

When asked if Suzuki Australia expects the wait times for three-door automatics – and the five-door – to ramp up, the executive said:

“Let’s see where this one takes us, and when it starts getting well over 12 months [in terms of wait time], that’s when I take consideration to the customer journey.

“Specifically because in terms of the environment in the market at the moment, with the interest rate rise and so forth, people might at some point unfortunately fall off a cliff when it comes to their fixed-rate situations and or business changes [in terms of securing finance for the car].

“If you start stretching vehicle supply out to over a 12 month period, a lot can change in a customer’s life. We take consideration of our customers and their changes in life as well. That’s a very hard thing to manage for our dealer network.

“So we’d like to keep it within a window where we can more so foresee certain expectations around what happens in the market and what happens for our customers,” Mr Pachota said.
