FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) – On Thursday, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced the first round of awards for the Charging the Crossroads plan, a program that gets electric vehicle charging stations to interstates and highways.

Thirty-nine applications were approved in the first round of the awards, bringing four stations to northeast Indiana and two to Fort Wayne.

Evans Toyota Financial Director Gary Cramer says there are limited options for EV charging stations and the ones available in Fort Wayne, are not traveler-friendly.

“When word got out that the bZ4X was gonna come out in 2023, the phones were ringing, people wanted the specs. When the research was done and they saw the infrastructure just wasn’t in place, they kind of backed off,” said Cramer.

He says the gap between charging stations is just too wide for traveling.

“To plan your trips based charging stations, doesn’t really sound like the American dream,” said Cramer.

INDOT Communications Director Natalie Garrett says one of the goals for this project is to reduce range anxiety to provide more convenient access.

Federal laws say, charging stations must be installed every 50 miles along the main fuel corridors, within one mile of an intersection or interchange.

Cramer says this could increase dealership sales once the stations are up and running.

“With the infrastructure in place, I think we’re gonna start to see a major growth, fifteen or twenty percent. The INDOT notice that came out today is gonna be huge for the community. I think there’s gonna be a little more confidence with the consumer,” said Cramer.
