2024 Renault Megane E-Tech Electric awarded five-star safety rating

Renault’s upcoming Megane E-Tech Electric small SUV will be sold with a five-star safety rating when it arrives in Australia next year.

The 2024 Renault Megane E-Tech Electric has received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) ahead of the electric SUV’s arrival in Australian showrooms next year.

Although the score is being published in Australia in 2023, the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric was tested in Europe in 2022 under ANCAP and sister organisation Euro NCAP’s 2020-2022 test protocols – which were superseded by stricter standards this year.

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric received scores of 85 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 88 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 65 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection (pedestrians and cyclists), and 80 per cent for Safety Assist technology.

Its strong Child Occupant Protection score was achieved due to high scores in ANCAP’s dynamic front and side tests, while the electric SUV’s restraint installation systems were also well regarded.

An 85 per cent result for Adult Occupant Protection came via perfect scores in the side impact test, with other strong showings for the full width frontal, oblique pole and far side impacts.

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric managed an 80 per cent score for its Safety Assist technology due to a well-calibrated autonomous emergency braking (AEB) junction assist system, as well as perfect results for its seat belt reminders and driver monitoring tech.

Despite its 65 per cent Vulnerable Road User Protection mark being good enough to retain a five-star safety rating overall, the result is the ninth-lowest of the 89 cars tested for Australia under ANCAP’s 2020-2022 test protocols.

This was largely due to a marginal pass for pedestrian head impacts (with 12.40 out of 24 possible points) and poor results for upper leg impacts (just 1.73 out of six points) – though perfect marks were given for lower leg impacts and its AEB pedestrian forward systems.
